Southern California has some great hikes and by fare one of the best is the coast walk from Torrey Pines Beach to La Jolla Shores Beach a two hour stroll done best at low tide. You will wander past towering sandstone cliffs, watch surfers, and if you lucky see a dolphin or two swimming in the Pacific Ocean. Pink a day that is clear and take a bottle of water, your camera, a hat and go barefoot but tie up some tennis shoes or sandals for when you have to walk over the rocky portions of the tidelands before you come to Scripps Pier. Say ahhh a lot , go for a swim if you take a towel and by all means take your sweet time .
Grand Canyon National Park is bigger than the entire state of Rhode Island. In some places, the canyon itself is over a mile deep and ten miles across.
The Hopi Tribe considers the Grand Canyon a gateway to the afterlife. The elevation of the South Rim is around 7,000 feet (2133m) above seal level.
The canyon is full of fossils of ancient marine animals that date back 1.2 billion years. The canyon was formed by erosion from wind, rain and the snowmelt from the Rocky mountains that make the raging waters of the Colorado River, a process that took at least 70 million years.

Late evening at the bird nature conservancy the blackbirds line up to rest before going on their evening fly to collect insects and like all birds have a nature instinct to fly off if any humans come close. The light was low so I decided to use of bit of photoshop art to create the damp winter like feeling.

Spiders produce silken thread using several paired spinneret glands located at the tip of their abdomen. Each gland produces a thread for a special purpose – for example a trailed safety line, sticky silk for trapping prey or fine silk for wrapping it. Spiders use different gland types to produce different silks, and some spiders are capable of producing up to 8 different silks during their lifetime.
Most spiders have three pairs of spinnerets, each having its own function – there are also spiders with just one pair and others with as many as four pairs.
Webs allow a spider to catch prey without having to expend energy by running it down. Thus it is an efficient method of gathering food. However, constructing the web is in itself an energetically costly process due to the large amount of protein required, in the form of silk. In addition, after a time the silk will lose its stickiness and thus become inefficient at capturing prey. It is not uncommon for spiders to eat their own web daily to recoup some of the energy used in spinning. The silk proteins are thus recycled.
The tensile strength of spider silk is greater than the same weight of steel and has much greater elasticity. . Taken in eastern Oregon long ago. Rising early in the morning which is usually the best time to find webs unbroken and decorated in dew and sunlight.

Acorn woodpeckers, as their name implies, depend heavily on acorns for food. In some parts of their range (e.g., California), the woodpeckers create granaries or "acorn trees" by drilling holes in dead trees, dead branches, telephone poles, and wooden buildings. The males like this one have red colored heads. The woodpeckers then collect acorns and find a hole that is just the right size for the acorn.
Their breeding behavior is unique, with multiple males and females combining efforts to raise young in a single nest. Only one or two pairs of Acorn woodpeckers in the group mate each year. The rest in the group help in incubation and feeding They also guard the storage granary inside the oak trees from other bird thieves. They do eat other berries and insects to increase their diet.
The Acorn woodpecker does not migrate. The family must stay near its granary tree. They like both oak and pine trees and the older trees have more acorns to collect. This one was in Pacific Groove near Monterey California.

A weekend of rain and snow was cold and damp but when the sun came out on the San Jacinto Mountains overlooking Palm Springs it was a wow moment. Not often covered in snow these peaks at around 6,000 feet to 8000 are inspiring to see and reminded me of images I see of Tibet or the Sierra Nevada mountains about 200 miles north. Say Amen somebody. for more great nature images with music try this flckr link flic.kr/p/2mMT8Yj

This is the same peacock as yesterday but without the closeup lens. I had to wait for some time untill at last he walked into the sunlight to put his full glory on display. Peacocks are large, colorful pheasants known for their iridescent tails. These tail feathers spread out in a distinctive train that is more than 60 percent of the bird’s total body length and boast colorful "eye" markings of blue, gold, red, and other hues. The large train is used in mating rituals and courtship displays. It can be arched into a magnificent fan that reaches across the bird's back and touches the ground on either side. Females are believed to choose their mates according to the size, color, and quality of these outrageous feather trains.
The term "peacock" is commonly used to refer to birds of both sexes. Technically, only males are peacocks. Females are peahens, and together, they are called peafowl.

Starfish live in salt water. They live in both cold and warm ocean locations. They are invertebrates, which means they have no backbone. They are also echinoderms, which means they have spiny or bumpy skin. They eat snails and clams and oysters. They are colorful to help them survive and in a coral reef blend in. They have no blood. Most have five arms but some have up to 40. They can grow new arms too. They can live up to 35 years. Most live alone but sometime like here they cluster when food is plentiful. These were eating snail stuck to pier pilings in San Diego.

Winter twilight in the canyons of San Diego. A patch of wild sage is silhouetted as sunset time still comes around 5 pm. A lovely time to walk and appreciate the stillness of winter. A fallow time of rest and regeneration even in California.

A photo taken at sunset at a lake in California in winter. These weeds, reeds, and plants were the quiet zen reflection of perfect balance. A few minutes later the color went from pastels to grays and blues and black. I was reminded of Japanese ink paintings and of the playful work of artist Miro. Sometime in nature photography you have to let your eyes wander to the quiet details instead of the wide landscape both are important.
