Meadow Pipits by Ranveig Marie Photography

Meadow Pipits

A meadow pipit (Anthus petrosus) from our neighbourhood.

They are a bit similar to their rock pipit cousins that I posted yesterday, but while the rock pipits mostly are found precisely on rocks and beaches by the sea, the meadow pipits are mostly found by the meadows and fields.

And while many rock pipits winter here by the sea, I have only seen two meadow pipits choosing to winter in our neighbourhood. But soon many of them will be back from Western and Southern Europe, filling our fields.

A funfact is that meadow pipits are the most common 'foster parents' of young cuckoos (gjøk in Norwegian). The adult cuckoo will lay a single egg in a meadow pipit's nest, and after hatching the cuckoo chick will push the other eggs or young birds out of the nest, giving its foster parents more time to concentrate on feeding their new, oversized chick.

Bird Yoga

Many Eurasian rock pipits (Anthus petrosus) migrate to western or southern Europe for winter, but on our island we have many throughout the year.

This is one of 12-20 individuals that we have had on a small stretch of rocks between the beaches here during winter.

I don't know if some of them are the same that breed here, or if all of them have migrated from even further north.

The year's first model by Ranveig Marie Photography

© Ranveig Marie Photography, all rights reserved.

The year's first model

2025 started with the same weather as I remember on the first day of 2024 - pretty nice with beautiful big waves on our beach.

Last year I photographed a little common guillemot (lomvi in Norwegian) in the big waves as my first model of the year.

Today it was harder to photograph the ducks and gulls in the waves, so I stuck to the about ten rock pipits (Anthus petrosus) around me, with the waves in the background.

The New Year's Bird Count have resulted in closer to 30 different bird species in our neighbourhood today. My most interesting ones were two red-throated loons (smålom).

Third Tree Pipit by Ranveig Marie Photography

© Ranveig Marie Photography, all rights reserved.

Third Tree Pipit

The tree pipit (Anthus trivialis) like this one, was one of the first birds I photographed and registered after buying better bird photography gear and getting even more interested in birds 4.5 years ago.

Although it is common in most of Norway, I have only seen and photographed it that first time, once more some months later, and then not until June this year when I took this photo.

It can be distinguished from the similar but slightly smaller meadow pipit (heipiplerke in Norwegian), by its heavier bill and greater contrast between its buff (yellowish-beige coloured) breast and white belly.

Tree pipits also more readily sit in trees, has a stronger call and a different and nicer song than the meadow pipit.

They winter in tropical Africa and return to their breeding grounds in May.

African Birds 😍 by Ranveig Marie Photography

African Birds 😍

An adult male rosy-throated longclaw (Macronyx ameliae), photographed from our safari jeep in Kenya last summer.

While being there, I started planning a new trip for others to the same great new Norwegian and Maasai camp.

I can't believe how fast time has flown. We're going back tomorrow already!

Even though the travel down and home again will be long and uncomfortable for my body right now, I look forward to evrything we will enjoy down there.

And most of all to see it all through the eyes of the participants who have never been to Africa before. (It will be my 4th time.)

Birding on Jæren by Ranveig Marie Photography

Birding on Jæren

A fluffy meadow pipit (Anthus pratensis) another summer on Jæren.

It is one of the most common birds to meet both there and on our island further south.

This is from one of the four places on Jæren I've been birdwatching together with a friend today, for the first time this summer. It was also fun to meet many other birdwatchers again on the different spots.

I've seen two new species today (the buff-breasted sandpiper and the pectoral sandpiper), and I heard the common quail for the first time as well, up close in the grass.

We also saw lots of migratory birds on both fields and beaches, and I got some good photos of a western marsh harrier.

Birds to the people! by Ranveig Marie Photography

Birds to the people!

I'm really excited to have started several collaborations lately, with organizations that wants to do more of what I love; to share photos and short facts, with the hope that others will learn more about, and pay more attention to, the birds and nature around us.

So soon my photos of birds and plants will be seen in even more arenas, which I will tell more about later ツ
