United in blue siding: Two buildings!, from 1908 (left) and 1907 (right). by Tim Kiser

United in blue siding: Two buildings!, from 1908 (left) and 1907 (right).

Also united in blue siding: two more buildings!, both from 1890, which I didn't have room for in my picture, except for a little at the right.

Siding-covered oriel windows are funny-looking and therefore good.

Two floors of apartments from 1932, upstairs from "Roll With It Tobacco Outlet, Inc." and next door to PA SKILL GAMES. by Tim Kiser

Two floors of apartments from 1932, upstairs from "Roll With It Tobacco Outlet, Inc." and next door to PA SKILL GAMES.

In downtown Ambridge, Pennsylvania, on July 10th, 2020, buildings on the west side of Merchant Street, north of 9th Street. The left building is from 1946 behind its façade, and the right building is from 1932.

"Skill games" in this context are like video slot machines or video lottery terminals, but the games have been modified to require some element of "skill," so as to bypass Pennsylvania state gambling regulations.

Differing tile schemes from the mid-20c, on competitive display at the boundary between adjoining buildings. by Tim Kiser

Differing tile schemes from the mid-20c, on competitive display at the boundary between adjoining buildings.

I guess I'll refer to the tile schemes as "the light grayish brown one" and "the tan one." The tan one wins, despite the damage at the bottom.

Both buildings (508 Felix St on the left and 502-506 Felix St on the right, formerly Einbender's clothing store) are originally from circa 1880. Imagine watching TIME MACHINE REACTION VIDEOS of 1880s adults seeing the mid-20c tile walls of the future.

Come downtown! by Tim Kiser

Come downtown!

Here, a perfect alignment between our preconceptions of what we would see in downtown Hartford, were we to visit downtown Hartford; and what we actually see in downtown Hartford when we visit there.

-----------------------

In downtown Hartford, Connecticut, on September 23rd, 2021, on the south side of Morgan Street South (U.S. Route 44), east of Main Street.

The buildings are "contributing properties" to the Department Store Historic District, 95000284 on the National Register of Historic Places. From right to left: the former G. Fox & Company Building (with yellow bricks, built 1918, designed by Cass Gilbert); the G. Fox & Company Warehouse (built 1918, later remodeled); and (I think?) an expansion of the warehouse, built 1930 and later converted to a parking garage.
