Lighting up time

Lighting up time - A wonderful end to the day watching the sun setting over South Uist out across the Minch with some intense and incredible light catching the cliff edge of the thin sliver of land leading out to the lighthouse at Neist Point.

One of the most westerly locations in the UK, Neist Point can be a fickle location at the best of times, sunset can be very hit or miss here; however when it’s good, it really is good. It's a location that’s hard to beat as one of the best places to witness sunset and it really comes into its own when conditions are as spectacular as this.

Hot and cold

Hot and cold - An intense sunset glow hangs in the sky across the Firth of Forth as the incoming tide swells up around the breakwater at the harbour at Pittenweem.

The seemingly warm sunset colours of the sky make a stark contrast to the cool tones of the water below. It all makes for a dramatic end to the day!

Ring of Brodgar sunset - A dramatic end to a summer's day at the Heart of Neolithic Orkney sees a sky laden with spectacular colour.

The Ring of Brodgar stands dramatically silhouetted against an intense sky with the setting sun disappearing between two of the standing stones of this incredible Neolithic icon. Witnessing an event like this is not easily forgotten and is befitting of this magnificent and unique setting.

Skye light breaks through

Skye light breaks through - Looking down the Trotternish ridge as dawn breaks across the Isle of Skye.

As the intense golden hour light breaks through a most welcome gap in the clouds above the Torridon mountains across on the mainland, the landscape is painted with incredible warmth revealing some spectacular colours.

Viewed from the Quiraing, the dawn light picks out the golden autumn slopes of Cleat and Bioda Buddha with Beinn Edra lurking in the distance.

Wild west

Wild west - A wild and intense end to the day at one of the most westerly locations in the UK, Neist Point, watching the sun setting over South Uist as the clouds blow in on a really stiff breeze across the Minch.

A tricky location to read the conditions reliably most of the time, sunset can be very hit or miss here; I've been fortunate on many of my visits to experience some very good conditions.

Just back from another amazing, rejuvenative week on Skye, experiencing the very best that this world-class landscape has to offer.

Voices of the past

Voices of the past - Summer sunrise at the Ring of Brodgar in the Heart of Neolithic Orkney as the sun just breaks over the Loch of Harray.

A 0330 start with a sky hinting with promise and with anticipation building, saw me arrive at the ring just before sunrise in time to witness something truly special at this stunning and inspirational location.

I was completely alone; neither a soul around nor a distant bird’s call to break the ethereal silence at this unearthly, yet superbly magical hour. Being totally alone at such an early hour, the stones take on not just a mystical presence, but seemingly come alive too; like silent, motionless figures all about to step forward, voices speaking of the hidden secrets they hold. The atmosphere and mystery of this ancient and spellbinding location were palpable, it was as through I had taken a step back into ancient history, transported into a different age.

To be able to witness daybreak at the ring is a unique and otherworldly experience more than one can ever imagine; words simply do not do it justice. A rich reward in so many ways for such an early start, not just for seeing a spectacular dawn, but also the privilege to be in peace with both nature and with the mysterious, ancient, historic past.

All points west - An intense, but brief, burst of colour at sunset at Neist Point, looking out across the Minch.

Dramatic conditions thrown up by the ever changing typical Skye weather. Moments after this was taken, the headland and lighthouse were barely visible such was the ferocity of the downpour that came in across the Minch. Incredibly, barely a drop of rain hit me and the cloudburst passed me by, though it was blowing a real hooley at the time. It is these ever changing intense conditions that can result in the most dramatic of results.

Being one of the most westerly points in the UK, it’s a location that’s hard to beat as one of the best places to witness sunset, and really comes into its own when conditions are as spectacular as this.
