If you are a visitor to the Big Bend Park, you may have noticed the hoodoos along the park road going from Persimmon Gap to the Panther Junction headquarters. One sits alongside the road and then they go on to the NW from there some distance back. This was about a mile in, I think. A little climb up along the cliff to get here. We noticed some lion scat on the ground and carefully retreated.
Pour les captifs et les kidnappés partout. Pour *tous* ceux qui souffrent des mains cruelles de la guerre.
*The distorted faces of the starving and suffering victims of war are carved into the rocks themselves.
*Les visages déformés des victimes de guerre affamées et souffrantes sont gravés dans les rochers eux-mêmes.
*Thinking of Goya. *Je pense à Goya. *Pensando en Goya.
This photograph of Balance Rock in Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs, showcases the iconic red sandstone formation in all its dramatic glory. The massive, teetering boulder, perched precariously on a narrow pedestal, dominates the frame. The rich, rusty hues of the rock contrast sharply with the bright blue sky overhead, creating a vivid and striking scene. The rugged texture of the sandstone is highlighted by the play of light and shadow, revealing the intricate layers and weathering that have shaped this natural wonder over millions of years. In the background, the surrounding rock formations and distant mountains add depth to the composition, emphasizing the unique geology of the area. The photograph captures the awe-inspiring beauty and balance of this natural landmark, a testament to the power and artistry of nature.
Millions of years of wind, water and sand have created these rock formations. Indirect light in the late morning conjure up a picture of the colorful sandstone with many color gradations.

When visiting the Wave for the first time, one is fascinated by the overall view of this unique location and is largely limited to it photographically.
The third time I was there, I spent a lot of time on the details. The sandstone layers in the picture can be found in the middle of the wave, here in the indirect light of the afternoon.
The rocks that form the spectacular Kimberley coastline are made up mostly of sandstone layers deposited roughly 1.8 billion years ago at the bottom of a shallow sea. Around Talbot Bay in the Buccaneer Archipelago, the layers have been buckled into large and often spectacular folds.
The discolouration seen here along the base of the cliff is the result of the constant rise and fall of the massive tides—of up to 11 metres—that occur in this part of the world.

One of Arizona's most spectacular natural wonders are its sandstone formations. Among these are the Antelope Canyon series of slot canyons. Of these, the recently opened Canyon X offers two side by side canyons which are full of fantastic visual treats and which were, at least at my time of visit, still largely undiscovered.
Enjoy!
