Fourplex aptbldg of circa 1910. by Tim Kiser

Fourplex aptbldg of circa 1910.

"A picture of a fourplex brings to life the quasquicentury just passed, in the form of our imagined memories of events in the lives of the fourplex's residents during that period," I bellowed as I took pictures from across the street. Then I waved at the faces that appeared in the windows.

In Bloomington, Illinois, on August 10th, 2024, was a fourplex (built circa 1910, per my review of Bloomington city directories at ancestrylibrary.com) on the west side of North Lee Street, south of West Market Street.

Enjoy a brickwork "chain" from circa 1930 in Rochester, Pennsylvania. by Tim Kiser

Enjoy a brickwork "chain" from circa 1930 in Rochester, Pennsylvania.

Gray was a weird choice of paint color for the first floor but I guess it looks okay. We have dark red brickwork atop a wall of tan bricks.

The local assessor website (for Beaver County, Pennsylvania) asserts that the building is from 1930. The latest city directory I was able to find for Rochester online is from 1927-1928, and the building was not yet listed at that time.

I see where the building formerly contained a cigar shop. The building's Beaver County property record card says it used to be a laundromat.

Watch as the façade curves around to the metal-framed glass door, with a sidelight on the left. Wow, do you see it?

The dark blue awning with beige stripes is so perfect for the building, why, I cannot even imagine the building without it.

Oh weird, an anti-Catholic anti-immigrant apartment building from 1913. by Tim Kiser

Oh weird, an anti-Catholic anti-immigrant apartment building from 1913.

Yea the Jr. O.U.A.M. were the Junior Order of United American Mechanics and were totally nativist as of 1913: only white native-born male protestants allowed, united in prejudicial dislike of individual members of the out-groups they had chosen.

Yea the building was completed in 1913 according to the Historic American Buildings Survey report on Jeannette, Pennsylvania. A banquet hall was on the first floor; apartments were on the second and third floors; and the lodge meeting room was on the fourth floor.

"I am anti-Jr. O.U.A.M. and I endorse the Fair Housing Act of 1968," I clucked in self-satisfaction as I took pictures of the building.

If it weren't for the 1901 datestone in the upper left, I would not care about the "McElheny" building at all. by Tim Kiser

If it weren't for the 1901 datestone in the upper left, I would not care about the "McElheny" building at all.

I take what I want from it: The fun of saying "Oooh it's from 1901." All I want is 1901. Just give me the 1901.

I do not care about the gray-and-white siding and the bright orange panels. It is fine with me that there aren't any flowers in the window baskets upstairs.
