Fourplex aptbldg of circa 1910.

"A picture of a fourplex brings to life the quasquicentury just passed, in the form of our imagined memories of events in the lives of the fourplex's residents during that period," I bellowed as I took pictures from across the street. Then I waved at the faces that appeared in the windows.

In Bloomington, Illinois, on August 10th, 2024, was a fourplex (built circa 1910, per my review of Bloomington city directories at ancestrylibrary.com) on the west side of North Lee Street, south of West Market Street.

The year 1948 took the form of a telecommunications building, and it sang to me, beautifully and cooingly: "AT&T... Southwestern Bell... AT&T... Southwestern Bell... 1948..." and so on, an irresistable beckoning.

I was lifted from the ground and I floated in mid-air toward the building, gently at first and then rapidly accelerating, and I was very frightened, and that's the last thing I remember. I learned later that I had been slammed against the side of the building, then had fallen to the ground. I'm okay now.

From 1965, a bright and cheerful commercial building.

We get beige brick veneer out front; painted concrete blocks to one side; and a shed roof of vinyl siding upstairs: "Three favorite surfaces," I said.

According to Google Streetview, the door and window at the lower left were bricked in sometime between 2012 and 2015. Out on the street is parked a blue Nissan Sentra from model years 2000-2003. Do you like Sentras?

1908 very large, age 115. by Tim Kiser

1908 very large, age 115.

The yellow and red plastic temporary refuse chute, and the shadow it casts, are interfering with my enjoyment of the trompe-l'œil mural of Black Hawk, from 1992, on this, the "Best Building" in Rock Island Ill., from 1908, named by the businessman Louis P. Best in honor of himself.

Huge funfact, there was a Montgomery Ward department store in the building from the 1930s to the mid-1970s, replacing earlier department stores. I still wear some of the shirts and pants I bought there.

Heavy copper cornice gonna fall on u head.

In 2022 in KCK see a repurposed city hall from 1911 and a Toyota Corolla from 2005, placed side-by-side for comparison.

The Corolla's color is Desert Sand Mica — my favorite color!

At the bottom there are 2 kinds of limestone, brought to Kansas from 2 weird places: Missouri (the subtly lighter "Carthage limestone" at the base) and Indiana (the "Bedford limestone" above it, with horizontal striations).

The building is loft apartments now.

Enjoy a brickwork "chain" from circa 1930 in Rochester, Pennsylvania. by Tim Kiser

Enjoy a brickwork "chain" from circa 1930 in Rochester, Pennsylvania.

Gray was a weird choice of paint color for the first floor but I guess it looks okay. We have dark red brickwork atop a wall of tan bricks.

The local assessor website (for Beaver County, Pennsylvania) asserts that the building is from 1930. The latest city directory I was able to find for Rochester online is from 1927-1928, and the building was not yet listed at that time.

I see where the building formerly contained a cigar shop. The building's Beaver County property record card says it used to be a laundromat.

Hide your eyes from this postmodern condotower from 2002 in downtown Madison.

The worst things about the building are: the stupid sets of double columns on the trapezoidal balconies; the tan bricks; and the lazy cuteness of "acknowledging" the building's triangular lot by cutely sprinkling triangular projections all around. The best things about the building are idk idc.

A visit to Melvin Grocery and The Closet Multi-Service LLC.

According to my analysis of Sanborn fire insurance maps of Hazleton, the building was probably erected sometime between 1905 and 1909.

My favorite things to buy at Melvin Grocery are jugos naturales y verde, sandwich, pagos de billes, and envios. My favorite things to buy at Closet Multiservice are Pennsylvania license plates, cell phones, and taxprep.

omg so cute!

This is the style of house I want. I love how the metal-framed glass door (with sidelights!) is in the center of the symmetrical façade. We get verticalities of light brown and beige, and a horizontality of tan. Do you see how the window and door elements are recessed slightly from the outer wall of the building? Mmm those brown curtains, I bet it's comfortable in there.

The difference between the circa-1910 bldg at the left and the circa-1885 bldgs next to it is approximately the difference between circa-2010 and circa-1985. Amazing!

I got stuck thinking about this for I-don't-know-how-long.

Watch as the façade curves around to the metal-framed glass door, with a sidelight on the left. Wow, do you see it?

The dark blue awning with beige stripes is so perfect for the building, why, I cannot even imagine the building without it.
