A Farewell to Arms

Well, a farewell to a Coat of arms anyway, 381 001 pulls away (well pushes actually with the control car of non-traction unit 951 002 leading the way) from the stop at Vajnory whilst working Os 4726 from Galanta.

Just above the driverless loco's number is a small sticker bearing the Coat of arms of Bratislava, another one occupies the same position at the other end.

The one and only JNR painted 381 Series crosses over the Nishigawa Bridge on an Okayama bound "Yakumo" limited express service. Despite the fog and light drizzle, the railfans were out in force to catch it, as well as the purple, and green 381's running on this day. They have since been replaced after ending regular operations in mid 2024.

Halimbai kitérő

Délutáni helyközis kanyarját teljesíti Halimbára Ajka utolsóként aktív Ikarus 280-as csuklós autóbusza (Ikarus 280.40M, GMY-381). A jármű korábban a Hajdú Volán színeiben Debrecen városának helyi járatát is megjárta, míg az ottani szolgáltatóváltás miatt felessegessé vált, amikor a Bakony Volán több társával együtt lecsapott rá, s Várpalota és Pápa mellett Ajka helyi autóbusz közlekedésébe is kerültek az egykori hajdúsági Ikarusokból. Többségük később sárga köntöst öltött, de mire a Volánbusznál elérte őket a vég, több is ÉNYKK csíkokkal rótta az utakat, mint a képen látható delikvens is.

Warrington Coachlines C1 (G100 TDJ)

This was the first new coach for the CoachLines unit of Warrington Borough Transport, and it would be the first of many, with four B10M / Van Hools and a pair of Van Hool Alizee integrals arriving in just two and half years, as well as numerous used additions.

It was one of their long stayers as well, being here until 1997, when it moved not far to Selwyn's at Runcorn. They too got good use from it, and it moved a bit further north to Furlong's Travel at Kirkby in 2003. Its final long stint was over in Suffolk, with Squirrells at Hitcham, from 2006 to 2013.

And even after all that, it was still exported in 2014 ....

G-APEX with Northeast Airlines was noted at Riem on 27 February 1971, which is probably the precise date for this shot. This airframe had visited Riem before with BEA (photo from April 1968) and would return with British Air Ferries in June 1982.

Information from flickr - thanks to Ken Fielding:
This aircraft was delivered to BEA British European Airways as G-APEX in Jun-58. It was sold to BKS Air Transport in Dec-69. BKS was renamed Northeast Airlines in Nov-70 when it became part of British Air Services. British Air Services was merged into British Airways in Apr-74. The aircraft continued in service with British Airways until it was sold to British Air Ferries in Mar-81. It was retired and stored at Southend, UK in Mar-84 and was broken up at Southend by 1994.

ČD - Player(?)

Oblivious to the approach of ČD's 381 010 helming Metropolitam EC 275 Prague to Budapest service, a (presumed) Double Bass player waits at Ivanka pri Dunaji for a Bratislava-bound train. I say 'presumed' as there's no guarantee that the case actually contains an instrument, there could be anything in there, for several years I carried a wooden chair and a whip around - it didn't make me a Lion tamer!

The Double Bass is the largest commonly used member of the Chordophone group of musical instruments - that is instruments that produce sound from vibrating strings when a performer strums, plucks, strikes or sounds the strings in varying manners. I was disappointed to learn that a person playing this particular instrument does not have a fancy name at all, they are known simply as a Double Bass player - shame, I was hoping for something like "Bassologist", "Double-B Man", "Bass Bad Boy", "Double Dude" or "Hey you, with the chronic back pain".

Heading Through the Rocks

Berkshire & Eastern local ED9 makes it way through the rock cut on the "Deerfield Loop". As they make their way to the Con River line to head south to server industries. We were lucky to catch them using a pair of GP40s that still wear the PanAm Railways paint scheme despite the company ceasing operation in 2022.

These locomotives are currently being leased to the Berkshire & Easter from CSX, who acquired PanAm in 2022. The fate of these engines are unknown, but once they are returned to CSX they will most likely no longer look as they do now.

The 381

This is what I believe is the only former PanAm railways GP40 to have a nose headlight. Never the less with PanAm painted locomotives becoming rarer each day figure it would be a good idea to get a detail shot of the locomotive.

Generations

While a lot of things are still the same in the East Deerfield Yard; the writing is on the walls for the changes in it's future. In these photo there are 3 different generations of railroading on the east end of the former Boston & Maine.

1 - All the Boston & Maine buildings, including the interlocking tower upfront to the shop complex in the distance.

2 - A pair of GP40s still wearing the PanAm Railways paint scheme preparing to depart.

3 - A GP40-2LW in the corporate Orange and Black of the Berkshire & Eastern parent company the Genesse & Wyoming

Both sets of power for todays EDBF and ED9 are still wearing the dark blue and white colors of the former PanAm railways which ceased operations in 2022 after be acquired by CSX Transportation.

Notching Out

A pair of EMD GP40-2s still wearing PanAm Railways colors notches out to get up to track speed at CPR33. This control point is one of many the still has Boston & Maine searchlight governing movements. Making nearly everything in this scene living on borrowed time. The signals will surely fall for modern LED signals and the pair of GP40-2 will eventually be returned to CSX and either be repainted into CSX colors or scrapped. So while it's been over 2 years since PanAm Railways was absorbed into CSX Transportation, you'd never know from this photo.

Somethings Haven't Change

Despite all the change the former Boston & Maine as seen over the past few years. There is nothing in this photo that would tell you it's from the post PanAm era. Well actually the massive pile of new ties kind of gives it away.

Blue Pullers: New England Edition

Berkshire & Eastern ED-9 pulls through the rock cut outside of East Deerfield Yard with what I believe are the remaining two Pan Am painted GP40s on the western portion of the railroad. The train would eventually head down the Conn River Line to work customers off the main.
