Clarence Monroe Miller moved his mill from Turner, Oregon to Marcola in 1924. He built the mill on the north side of the Mohawk River, just west of Parsons Creek. From there, several miles of railroad were built with branches on both sides of Drury Butte.
Being a small mill it did have issues along the way and a few extended closures. However, this accident was the end of the company.
On March 8, 1929, Clarence Miller was bringing the locomotive down the grade around Drury Butte and Floyd Ayers was his brakeman. At one point the popoff valve came completely off the engine. This valve was designed to release excess pressure to prevent a boiler explosion. However, a complete loss resulted in the loss of 100% of the steam pressure. So no power and no brakes. At this point it became a 40-ton sled rocketing downhill.
As soon as they realized what had happened, Clarence and Floyd jumped free of the locomotive. Neither were hurt from their landings.
In the picture you can see a couple of log cars and miscellaneous logs spread around. You can see where the locomotive overturned going around the curve, began to slide and tore up and bent the track.
The locomotive was a total loss. As the company could not afford a new engine nor was there any hope of repairing this one, the mill closed down. In May of 1929 all assets of the company were sold, including the remnants of this locomotive.
