LHB89 at Graham

On a cold and cloudy morning, UP 6367 rolls through southeast Houston on its way to the Texas coast with the LHB89 turn.

This is normally an overnight job, though it's not uncommon for this train to run late enough to see daylight.

Let it Roll

Yesterday Nebraska Central ran a relief crew on a Platte Valley Turn that didn't make it back to Grand Island on Monday night. Current operations typically have this job heading back west after dark so it was great to catch them in the daylight just getting underway. NCRC 2197, 2207, and 6326 smoke out Polk, Nebraska getting up to track speed.

The main customer for the Platte Valley Turn is the Green Plains Ethanol Plant in Central City. It was originally named Platte Valley Ethanol hence the station name PVE and job name. It's traded ownership a few times, but has been under the Green Plains banner for over a decade now. NCRC 2197 and company pauses before cutting off and picking up about 30 cars from the ethanol plant.

Zero to 100 in ten turns -[ HMM ]-

A multi-turn control knob on a Tektronix 465B oscilloscope. The knob, one inch (25.4mm) in diameter, operates a potentiometer (variable resistor) that requires ten full revolutions of irs shaft to cover its entire resistance range, allowing finer adjustment than a standard potentiometer with a ¾- to ⅞-turn range.

High speed turns

As I clicked thru a few hundred shots in the archives this morning I came across this shot of a shark fin taken from the beach at Ft. Pickens, Florida. If it was just a fin, it probably would have stayed in the cold darkness that is my external hard drive and never seen the light of the world wide web. It is the water swooshing from the high-speed turn that caught my eye and made me laugh this morning and decide to share it. The sharks’ rapid movements were produced due to it and another shark seemingly dancing in some type of wooing ritual.

Years ago, the Mrs. and I ran into some friends that we had not seen in a few years…a chance encounter that made both of us realize just how much they were missed. As we stood and talked, as often happens, the ladies paired off and went on about our kids who grew up together. For some reason, the other male and I decided that aging was the topic for us. At one point he rubbed his balding head and said aloud “This is what happens when you make too many high-speed turns under the sheets!” I just about died laughing as I had never heard that saying before.

Since that day, any chance I get to use that saying concerning my thinning noggin, I insist on using it because it makes me laugh and instantaneously snaps the Mrs. face in my direction, giving me her “STOP IT” mom eyes!
