Epic Hampi, India

Two women in colourful sari dress walking in the ruins of Shri Achyutaraya Swamy Temple, surrounded by the unique bizarre landscape of Hampi. The rocks and boulders seem to glow in late afternoon light from the day's heat.
.
Hampi was the capitol of the Vijayanagara Hindu kingdom in the early 16th century and by 1500 CE the 2nd largest city in the world after Beijing. The Vijayanagara empire was defeated by a coalition of Mughal sultanates, its capitol conquered and destroyed in 1565. Today the ruins of over 1,000 monuments, temples and fortifications are spread over a vast area in a rocky terrain with bizarre boulder formations, all designated as UNESCO World Heritage site.

Schlangen 🐍

Elephant bath, Hampi India

Cleansing and a moment of joy in the Tungabhadra river early morning. This here is a short distance upriver from the shot of the men's bathing place published previously.
.
The elephant was later decorated and painted with colourful patterns and symbols and then provided blessings in the temple as part of a major festival. Here is also a shot of the decorated elephant published some time ago.

A look inside the temple by W.MAURER foto

A look inside the temple

On our tours through Bali, it happened frequently that the sound of a gamelan orchestra led us to one of the numerous temple festivals. Also here, we stopped our scooter and followed the strange sounds. At my request, some festively dressed locals beside the street invited us to enter the small temple, where preparations for a festival were made while a gamelan orchestra was rehearsing. We were allowed to film and take photos and received only friendly and open reactions to our interest in their doing. Only the innermost part of each temple is absolutely taboo for non-Hindus.
Nevertheless, I caught this brief glimpse of the rich offerings in the inner sanctum.

Sculpture, Osian Rajasthan by flovision.net

Sculpture, Osian Rajasthan

Partly broken sculptures in an old temple in Osian. Red symbols or emphasising marks are painted in red on the female lead figure. If anyone here has more info as to the meaning or purpose please comment, i'd like to learn more. Thanks.

From the same temple as the previously published shot in Osian (or Osiyan), an ancient city formed around an oasis in the Thar desert in Rajasthan, not far from Jodhpur. It was a major stop for camel caravans around the 5th century CE and much later became a major center of first Jainism and later Hinduism for hundreds of years. In 1195 CE the city was mostly destroyed and deserted thereafter.
