A white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) that I met on the island I'm from two weeks ago.
Normally I photogram them like this from a boat, but here it came close to the road together with seagulls and herons for some fish guts in a bay.
It is an almost six years old female, ringed in Øygarden close to Bergen as a chick, and called N7 O8. It was fun the get a call from the excited ringer after registering it, who got to see how it now loos as an adult ツ

Today Richard and I have been in the same birds of prey hide as 3.5 weeks ago. Now we had even more birds than last time, although I was happy then as well.
The most surprising and wonderful visit today was a female hen harrier, that came to pose and eat three times (myrhauk in Norwegian). We also had two goshawks (hønsehauk) and a rough-legged buzzard (fjellvåk), like the last time.
But like then, none of the three common buzzards (Buteo buteo) there would come down from the tree tops to pose.
So here is one of them (an adult) in a top, until I hopefully get better ones of this species another time.

Our other common hawk- a (young) Eurasian goshawk (Astur gentilis), that was screaming at an adult goshawk who was coming for its food.
I photographed it 2.5 weeks ago on Jæren, where I have been on a birdwatchig road trip in the sunshine today as well.
Normally January is a month of little bird photography, but I have met many different and special species this month.

January ends in the same beautiful way as it started. In between the nice weather, cold and snow, we have had lots of rain and storms as well. But today we just have to enjoy the lovely last day.
This is from my birthday earlier this month. While talking on the phone, I saw that a sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) chased a crow and a magpie outside our house. It was hard to get good photos since I was on the phone, but it's a fun story.

I haven't got any good photos of the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) yet, but I still want to show it here, since I have had so many encounters with it lately.
Some days ago, we heard one screaming above our house and saw it flying away from our kitchen. Yesterday a friend and I had one flying right in front of the car on Jæren.
And for two mornings now, the peregrine falcon in our neighbourhood has been eating on barnacle geese from the big flock here. Today I got some documentation photos of it while eating, but if it sees movement, it immediately flies further back into the field and sits there waiting to get back on the prey.
I visited a neighbour as well today, where we could watch it all from the kitchen. It went back to the prey after some time. Too bad the falcon won't accept me taking photos 😉
The falcon should be too small to kill the geese, so maybe the goshawk in the neighbourhood has killed them (although we only have seen the falcon on the prey).
This is one of several photos of it from the archive. This adult bird (which is grey), is from a walk in a forest in town. I also had some of a young bird (which is brown) from the same field in our neighbourhood as today- from the last time a group of Arctic geese visited, some years ago.
I took some better photos one time I had one right above my head outside our house, but sadly I can't seem to find them.
The peregrine falcon can reach over 320 km/h (200 mph) during its characteristic hunting stoop (high-speed dive), making it the fastest animal on the planet. Some claim to have measured it up to 389 km/h (242 mph).
It is also the world's most widespread raptor. The breeding range includes land regions from the Arctic tundra to the tropics. It can be found nearly everywhere on Earth, except extreme polar regions, very high mountains, and most tropical rainforests; the only major ice-free landmass from which it is entirely absent is New Zealand.

We were on our way to the Twee Rivieren region when we saw this beautiful bird of prey with its fascinating look perched on the top of a tree in the morning light!

Almost two years ago already, I uploaded the first series of two young white-tailed eagle siblings (Haliaeetus albicilla). They were ringed as N7 74 (almost two years old) and N7 75 (this one- almost one year old) in the same nest on our island, by a friend of ours.
One of them sat on the ice on the other side of town, eating some meat when suddenly the other came for a fight. They took off and continued in the air, before two more eagles arrived as well.
Sadly the fous on my previous camera stopped working while they were on the ice, but I have sharpened them as good as I can to keep them for memory's sake.

I have seen common buzzards (Buteo buteo) like this one in Norway many times, but only have one good photo- of one that sat in the snow for like ten seconds last year. I also have this and another one from more distance in Greece last year.
Today Richard and I are in a hide, where we've photographed two goshawks (hønsehauk in Norwegian) and two rough-legged buzzards (fjellvåk) by now.
We've also heard and seen a common buzzard in the air, so we really hope to get that one to pose for us as well, up close for even better photos than before.

On last year’s second-to-last day, I finally got to photograph a (young) Eurasian goshawk (Astur gentilis) for the first time, which I had hoped and tried for many times earlier in the year, without luck.
But I can't call it last year's last model, since I photographed many jays (nøtteskriker in Norwegian) later that day. It even started snowing during the afternoon, but sadly the goshawk didn't come back for that.
Today we have got snow at home as well. Another nice start of the new year.
