IC 6250 @ Chicago, IL

One of the last IC SD40s operating in the Midwest leads the "Recycle Job" AKA R967 back toward home base, that being Glenn Yard. Here it is passing 18th street with the city skyline in the background shortly before midnight. Just a day later 6250 got sent back to Kirk, this would be the only time this pair would be sent out on this train.

CN 9615 @ Kensington Tower - Chicago, IL

While waiting for South Shore Freight AF12 to leave Belt Railway of Chicago’s Commercial Avenue Yard a couple miles north of here, CN’s Recycle Job made a surprise appearance first, as that was the reason CSS hadn’t gotten their light at Fordham onto CN trackage.

CN train R9679106 from Canadian National’s Glenn Yard, head’s south through the busy Kensington junction on the Thoroughfare, passing the decaying 108 year old Illinois Central interlocking tower. CN 9615 (GP40-2LW) leads a former IC GP38-2, as they rattle over the South Shore diamonds on their trip to Cook County Lumber just south of here on the CN Chicago Sub. Taken: 4-6-25

Recycled

CN R967, the "Recycle", heads north into the city with a single empty centerbeam from Cook County Lumber near Fordham. A repainted IC GP40R and a GTW GP38-2 give it the works.

The CN “Recycle Job” heading South past the Kensington Tower on the South side of Chicago with a pair of Trunks for power. This now an as needed extra board job that runs whenever, so being at 18th street and seeing this guy pull up behind me was quite the surprise and unexpected. The pair of Trunks was definitely a major bonus!

A pair of Trunks lead the R967 job South under the 41st Street pedestrian overpass on their way towards Marigold in the Burnside neighborhood.

The Recycle

In the aftermath of the morning rush, GTW #5832 brings a six-car R967 through 16th Street interlocking on the return trip to Glenn Yard. Although not the prettiest of the bunch, #5832 is a genuine GTW GP38-2, one of 25 built for the Grand Trunk Western in the late 1970s, still in its original livery from forty years ago.

City of Big Shoulders

GTW #5936 and BLE #866 take R967, the Recycle Job, around the curve near 16th Street as they make their way back to Glenn Yard. The lead engine, #5936, was originally a MoPac SD40-2, hence the absence of dynamic brakes, and is the sole remaining SD40-2 in GTW livery.

Bridgeport Junction

CN R967 make the turn at Bridgeport Junction to go down the old Alton towards Glenn Yard behind a cluttered view of the Chicago skyline.

As many as four railroads converged on this interlocking in days past. The Illinois Central, Santa Fe, Chicago and Alton (later Gulf, Mobile, and Ohio), and, for a short time, the Wisconsin Central (pre-SOO Line) shared a double-track Page bascule bridge over the South Fork of the South Branch of the Chicago River, more commonly known as Bubbly Creek; the bridge is still in service and can be seen here in the upper-right corner.

With six tracks converging to two across the C&A bridge and then expanding to as many as eight tracks on the east side of Bubbly Creek, one could only imagine how bad congestion was at this interlocking in the heyday of passenger trains. The CTA completed the Midway Branch in 1993.

The Windy City

At 2:17 PM CST, EJE #658 takes the R967 over the CJs, ex-B&OCT, and PRR Panhandle at the massive Brighton Park Crossing on Chicago's southwest side as the first round of Labor Day's severe thunderstorms roll in.

That day brought an onslaught of flooding, damaging winds, and a short EF0 tornado on the West Side, paralleling Fifth Avenue for roughly two miles before dissipating. Little did I realize, until examining it closely, the massive funnel cloud behind the signal bridge, just above #658, which may very well have been the tornado itself.

Needless to say, it was a more than average day in the Windy City, a day that it actually lived up to its name.

BNSF #4533, with M338 in tow, passes R967 just south of 39th Street interlocking on Chicago's south side. BNSF power has become extremely common on the 337/338 trains lately, an homage to the failed merger of 1999 between CN and BNSF.

At The Carwash

For some reason I thought this nighttime picture of a carwash would look good. I used my point and shoot on a tripod because that is all I had at the time. It looks a little grainy because of the high ISO.

The carwash is at a Shell gas station.

Into Air

This was taken in June of 2007 (STS-117). I was visiting Florida with my mom before I even got my D80. I had my little HP r967 point and shoot on me, and it served well. This shot was taken from a tripod while trying to film the launch with a video camera at the same time. I still love it because I think the chances of a bird flying perfectly underneath the launch right at this time are just unfathomable

Enigma

This is what the high altitude winds did with the smoke trail of the shuttle (STS-117) shortly after launch that night. I promise you there was no editing to this picture other than a quick brightness/contrast adjustment in photoshop. It was just astounding to see the clouds curl up and around eachother in mid-air

I'm getting a ton of views on this picture, and I can't track where from. Would someone leave a comment and tell me where you found this picture so I can track down who's giving me all these lovely views?
