‘And I got a peaceful easy feelin'
And I know you won't let me down
'Cause I'm already standin'
On the ground’

Peace of the beautiful countryside location of Rose Lane crossing is interrupted as 68030 powers up and catches the eye of the pedestrians.

The closure notice on the gate has caught their eye, with plans in place to replace the crossing with a road bridge.

The people arrived at the last moment, giving rise to a quick recomposing of the picture, literally seconds before the train hurtled through!

Glide on the Peace Train
Come on now Peace Train

The Poppy is a well known symbol of remembrance and hope for a peaceful future. Amidst the chaos and destruction of World War One, poppies were still able to flourish.

In the spring of 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote his now famous poem after seeing poppies growing in battle-scarred fields. The poem was instrumental in the Poppy becoming a symbol of remembrance.

In Flanders’ Fields

In Flanders' fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders' fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high,
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders' Fields.

Rose Lane Crossing

On Friday 17th September 2021, with an alteration to the working timetable, the 1V52 07:01 Edinburgh to Plymouth service was diagrammed for an 'HST' set, seen powering past Rose Lane crossing at Church Fenton, with power car 43207 leading and 43366 at the rear. Cross Country operated twelve Class 43/0 power cars, all with MTU engines, at this time. They were renumbered into the 432xx and 433xx series upon installation of MTU engines by adding 200 to their original running number. An interesting history of the Cross Country HSTs can be found here: railrevisited.blogspot.com/2019/03/the-crosscountry-hsts....

Rose Lane Achilles Heel

The busy section of line between Leeds and Church Fenton is earmarked for electrification, but undoubtedly at great expense, ultimately to the taxpayer under Network Rail. The Rose Lane footbridge and manned level crossing, providing access to a small number of dwellings, mainly former railwaymen's cottages, will be a costly problem to overcome. On Friday 17th September 2019, Trans Pennine Express 68023 'Achilles' provides noisy traction at the rear of the 5D08 08:24 Liverpool Lime Street to York ecs.
