This image captures a moment of collaboration among skilled craftsmen in Kyoto, Japan, as they meticulously lay the foundation for a traditional structure. The composition highlights the geometric precision of the wooden frame against the textured gravel, emphasizing the harmony between nature and craftsmanship. The warm tones of the wood contrast beautifully with the cool colors of the surroundings, creating a visually engaging narrative of construction and cultural heritage.

Church's website
Some of you may have noticed that I like to photograph along the Lincoln Highway. There are a couple of reasons. First of all, it's the OLDEST named highway - dedicated in 1913. It's the original "mother road" which years later John Steinbeck would nickname US 66 in a rather poetic turn of phrase (I've read the book).
Secondly, I've lived within a few miles of the LH for more than half of my adult life.
Thirdly, there's lots to photograph along the LH in the more rural areas.
Which brings me to this picture. I've had the opportunity to spend some time in the southwest Chicago suburbs in the last few weeks, and took the Lincoln Highway home...specifically the stretch from Plainfield to Aurora.
There once was a time when this area was nicely rural and had a few things to photograph. Not anymore. Urban sprawl has hit. If there aren't housing developments, there are industrial parks. There are very few rural touches anymore. There are a few farm fields, but even the barns are cleaned up. Definitely not a route to find murder shacks!
Plainfield embraces their Lincoln Highway heritage, but all of the old structures appear to have been "quaintified." Ugh.
But I found this church. It's pretty, but that can't be helped. it's got a graveyard, some nice fall color, and great light. Plus, it's on the original alignment. So, I got that going for me, which is nice.

As usual, the ramp ruins the shot. And with bright yellow railings, it's really ugly. So I monochromized it and slightly mitigated the damage.

I caught this just in time. Less than a week later, the house had been knocked down.
[update] Here's some backstory. I live about five minutes from this place. And pass it almost every day. However, the house had always been surrounded by trees and brush. And, since the farm was active, I figured the house was occupied. My personal rule regarding murder shacks is that they are unoccupied. I don't always obey that rule, but it is an aspiration.
They're doing a big road construction project nearby. They've been clearing the farm land. Then, suddenly, when I passed on this particular day, the house was visible! And it was clearly unoccupied. And the sky was perfect. So I quickly drove home, told Kate I had to shoot a murder shack, grabbed my camera, and left again.
The house is now gone, along with a really shabby barn, and a shed. The only thing still standing is the silo. I'm curious to see what happens to it.
[update 2] - It's gone.
