With the Y119 turn from Saginaw on the drawbar, LSRC 6431 and friends pull into the former PM/C&O/CSX McGrew Yard in Flint, MI.
With the return train (and power) for Saginaw already staged at the north end of the yard, the crew will tie this train down and then hop on their return ride home. Lake State runs a tight ship, and this crew will get to sleep in their own beds tonight.
LSRC 6431 was formerly UP 4608, purchased by the Lake State in 2022.

Running a little later than usual on a cool September evening, the Lake State's Y119 turn races south among soybean fields between Birch Run and Clio. With a long, heavy train this evening, this four-pack of six-axle units are working hard on the undulating terrain of central Michigan.

Built April of 1974, this is a Thrall "All-Door" boxcar. Classified as LU by the AAR, all four side panels are removable plug-doors. These unique cars were essentially 70-ton bulkhead flatcars with a roof and doors attached. They were built to protect plywood and other building materials from the elements. With many moving parts, door maintenance costs and their relatively light loading weight led to their discontinued use. And with the advent of wrapped plywood and higher-capacity 73' centerbeam flatcars, they've all but disappeared.
Lake State has one of the last remaining fleets of all-door boxcars, making them a rarity to see at all. And with most cars built in the late 60's and early 70's, their time in service in running out soon.
