50 3519 serves the siding of the industries built around the former coal mine "Karl Liebknecht Schacht". This was the last day of regular steam service and I never came back to photograph railroads at this interesting place.
At the time I took this photo, the winding tower and some of the surrounding buildings had been a museum for 2 years. The mine itself had closed long before that, in 1971.
May 28, 1988 was the last day of regular steam service at the Glauchau depot. The names of the engineer and fireman, Schülke and Naumann, are written on the smoke box door. Their shift is about to end. And the very last regular steam shift is about to begin.

50 3519 was one of the few steam locomotives still in regular service in the spring of 1988. It is very well maintained and shows a very rare type of white decoration on the wheels. This type of decoration was more common on Polish steam locomotives, which I did not know at that time.

This picture was taken about a second after the one I showed yesterday. As I wrote yesterday, it was a family trip and I was not the only one with a camera. My dad took a picture as well.
You may be wondering why I used color slides and my dad used black and white. There were several reasons. I was more influenced by my grandfather and my uncle. They both took a lot more pictures than my dad, and they both used color slides. Another reason was cost. I did not have access to the equipment necessary to develop black and white film and prints. The total cost of black and white was almost twice as much as color slides when developed and printed in labs. But photography was not a cheap hobby. A slide film cost 8.45 M and the development 2.50 M. Just for comparison, my father earned about 1000 M per month as a software engineer.
Another early attempt of my railway photography. I took this picture during a family trip to Rochsburg Castle during the Pentecost weekend of 1984. I was able to convince my family to make a short stop in Amerika, a very small settlement near Penig. And I was even lucky that a steam powered freight train came at the right time. Of course, at that time I did not manage to include any markers in the picture that would make it possible to distinguish the place from others.
