September 21, 2024 - Our last full day on the trip was spent at Mesa Verde National Park, the first archaeological park established in our National Parks System and designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1978.

Juxtaposing the roofline of the entrance gate to the Zen-style garden and the tree that stands just outside the walls, at first glance it looks like a shower of gold leaf has blown off the tile roof and will land imminently on the garden.

At one side of the Japanese-style garden's gate there is this heavy basin with trickle of water flowing over the pool. Visitors are invited to rinse their hands before entering the grounds, but most will only snap a picture, touch the wet surface, or pause long enough to admire the sight and sounds before entering the garden.
