57303, paired with 69010, leaving Great Yarmouth pulling empty non-passenger rolling stock to Doncaster.
The Class 57 has its origins in 1997 when Freightliner ordered an initial six re-engineered locomotive, rebuilt by Brush Traction at Loughborough from redundant Class 47 locomotives. The locomotives are fitted with a refurbished EMD engine and a reconditioned alternator, improving reliability and performance. Three variants exist, one for freight and two for passenger operations. The class are nicknamed 'Zombies'.
57303 started life as Class 47 D1957 which was completed at Brush Works in Loughborough in 1967. It became 47261 in the early 1970's when the TOPS numbering system was introduced and was later modified with electric train heating equipment to become part of the Class 47/4 fleet as 47554. Its next revision was to become push-pull fitted Class 47/7 47705.
In the early 2000's it was selected for rebuilding into a Class 57/3 for Virgin Trains. This sub-class was built to provide 'Thunderbird' cover on the West Coast Main Line as well as for hauling Class 390 Pendolinos from Crewe to Holyhead. It was named 'Alan Tracy' in Virgin Trains ownership.
The rebuild saw the locomotive fully overhauled and equipped with an EMD 12-645 engine together with a refurbished alternator to give it a new lease of life. It was later modified with the addition of a Dellner coupling built into the cab front. Following service with Virgin Trains, 57303 passed into the Network Rail fleet before moving on to Direct Rail Services where it carried the name 'Pride of Carlisle'.
Its a long time since I venture up onto the A52 road bridge at Toton, a favourite spot in the 1970s and 1980s!
In addition to the Tesco train there are three other trains on the running lines in this view - 66613 on the 6E68, March to Tunstead, 66314 going away on the 6M23 Doncaster to Mountsorrel and finally in the distance 66104 on the 6M82 Walsall to Dowlow. Thanks to the gentleman from London also perched on the bridge I decided to chase the Dowlow working to Great Rocks where I was due for a cup of coffee and I arrived at the bridge at Peak Forest 60 seconds before it arrived!! In sun no less!!!
With the sun in completely the wrong place but something not seen too often these days so it had to be recorded. DRS class 56 No.57307 'Lady Penelope' has arrived at Preston after retrieving the stricken Avanti West Coast class 390 No.390011 from Grayrigg after it picked a fight with a wire cage this morning while working 1S36 (06:05 Birmingham New Street to Edinburgh Waverley).
5H88 15:56 Grayrigg to Preston for onward transit to Longsight TMD.
