The Autumn Plumage by Ranveig Marie Photography

The Autumn Plumage

It is nice to have the northern wheatears (Oenanthe oenanthe) back on all the regular places now.

Now they have a more grey plumage, but for autumn before they migrate again, they turn more orange like here.

World Curlew Day by Ranveig Marie Photography

World Curlew Day

Right after having a flock of 51 common curlews (Numenius arquata) above me on our island today, I was told that today is the international World Curlew Day.

World Curlew Day was established by the English environmentalist, author and producer Mary Colwell in 2017 to raise awareness of the curlews' plight. It is commemorated each year on 21st April, the date Mary began her 500-mile walk for curlews in 2016.

We have had large flocks of common curlews in our neighbourhood the last days, having a break in their migration on our skerries and fields.

This is the first common curlew I met this year, already on January 10th on Jæren. It must have wintered here. I felt a little sorry for it there in the snow.

April Again! by Ranveig Marie Photography

© Ranveig Marie Photography, all rights reserved.

April Again!

April starts just as lovely this year, as I remember last year- with sunshine and warm temperatures.

I started the day by meeting my first three small tortoiseshells (Aglais urticae) this year, on Siberian squill (Othocallis siberica/Scilla siberica) in a garden I visited.

There were also some honey bees and early bumblebees on the flowers (honningbier og markhumler in Norwegian), my first for the year. And we met several small bird species and a common European adder (Hoggorm) in the garden as well.

This day one year ago was the last day of Easter break. Then I also saw and photographed a small tortoiseshell like these for the first time that year, on coltsfoots in my sister's garden.

Lovely!

Last Spring's Result

A young northern wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe) by our beach early last summer.

I love that the first true month of spring is here now, although we had the first snowdrop flowers already in January and the first coltsfoot flowers and migratory birds in February.

Like I say every year- this is the best time of year. with so much to look forward to!

Winter meeting spring by Ranveig Marie Photography

© Ranveig Marie Photography, all rights reserved.

Winter meeting spring

A male European stonechat (Saxicola rubicola), just like the one I saw in the morning sun outside our kitchen today.

This one is from Jæren, in the last sunset of January last week. There they are seen through the winter, but on our island a little further south we don't use to see them until the end of February or early March.

But today it was here already, as the first in our municipality for the year.

I also found a second species today that was new for our municipality for the year- two razorbills (alker) out on the sea here. Extra fun, since I posted them here yesterday- saying that I rarely see them here, and it was 4.5 years since my last time ツ

It really felt like spring outside today, with sunshine after a cold night lots of birds chirping, lots of birds at sea, and even the first coltsfoots (hestehov).

January Birds by Ranveig Marie Photography

January Birds

A beautiful male European stonechat (Saxicola rubicola) from the archive, on Jæren one January afternoon.

I got some new photos of one in the snow recently as well. Many of them winter on Jæren, and are normal to find there at this time.

(Svartstrupe-hann, in Norwegian)

Today I went to Jæren to see the very rare red-breasted goose for the first time (rødhalsgås in Norwegian). It had arrived together with all the other geese species there now, like on our island.

Orange Beauty by Ranveig Marie Photography

Orange Beauty

A white-browed robin-chat (Cossypha heuglini) in Kenya this past autumn. (It was formerly known as Heuglin's Robin, named after the German ornithologist Von Heuglin.)

It belongs to the flycatcher family, and there are some other species that looks very similar- but this has a little wider eye stripe, and fits the best with the area.

It is found in east, central and southern Africa.

Last November by Ranveig Marie Photography

Last November

Today November starts with stormy weather. From last year, I remember many nice November days where I went to the beach nearby to photograph all the red crossbills (Loxia curvirostra) like this one, that filled the trees there for several months. (In addition to some parrot crossbills, great spotted woodpeckers and a treecreper.)

It would be nice to get bird experiences nearby like that this year as well.

Summer Gardens by Ranveig Marie Photography

Summer Gardens

I love the purple colour of this beautiful shrub rose called Rhapsody in Blue, from a colleague's garden.

I've read that it is a modern shrub rose, bred in the UK as recently as 1999.

Today we finally have a nice summer day ahead again, and my parents and I are taking the ferry to visit another island nearby called Tysnes.

We will drive around, take a little walk, visit a friend and enjoy both her beautiful garden and a beautiful hotel garden, and eat delicious food on a farm.

Sunshiny Day!

Finally a day with bright sunshine this July!

I will start spending it at sea, photographing the white-tailed eagles, and then enjoy the wildflowers and garden.

These are Oriental poppies (Papaver orientale) that have spread from gardens among the meadow buttercups (Ranunculus acris) in the ditches in the town where I live.

I didn't have the time yesterday- so here is one of the photos of them. I hope they have had a wonderful year and so many more to come!

Bow & Stretch

One of two oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus) that we met on the same islet, every day at sea on the island I'm from during the Easter break.

This one was ringed, and when it turned around I was able to see all seven numbers and register it.

It was ringed 7 years and 9 months earlier as a chick, on the island Røtinga near Os (about two hours north by car), and had not been registered before me.

Entrance of April ❁ by Ranveig Marie Photography

Entrance of April ❁

The first day of April yesterday was SO lovely!

I traveled together with my parents from a lovely Easter vacation at their place, to visit my sister and her family on my way home.

The weather was so lovely, and the kids could play outside the whole day, without outerwear.

I was lucky to spot my first butterfly this year - this small tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae), on the first coltsfoots I've seen this year as well, in my sisters' tiny garden. A very nice confirmation that spring really is here ♡

Sadly I couldn't go together with my niece and nephew in the park as I would like to, since the pain in my back, pelvis and feet are worse than ever now, but this little beauty (and my family) made my day ♡
