Ah the big brick backside of the "Steubenville Banking and Loan Association" building, in brown paint. by Tim Kiser

Ah the big brick backside of the "Steubenville Banking and Loan Association" building, in brown paint.

This 1986 report asserts that the Steubenville Banking and Loan Association (SBLA) began operating at this site no later than 1905 (in some other building, not this one), and that this building was "probably" built "slightly later" than 1905 — but that "little" is known about the history of the building.

I think it's possible that this part of the building is actually from 1875, for the following reasons:

• PER MY REVIEW of Burch city directories at the library edition of Ancestry.com, the SBLA was operating at this site by 1899 (i.e., well earlier than 1905).

• MOREOVER, Sanborn fire insurance maps of Steubenville show buildings of the same footprint and layout here (the northeast corner of 3rd and Market) in both April 1900 and December 1913. The building on the 1900 map is labeled "Dougherty Block."

This plate from 1877 in the David Rumsey Map Collection shows the Dougherty Block with an 1875 datestone. The building is of the same height, and has a similar arrangement of upstairs windows, as the SBLA building.

So maybe there never was a new SBLA building. Maybe the old Dougherty Block just got a new terracotta façade at some point.

If it turns out I'm right, I expect to be rewarded hand$omely $$!

Anyway, I like these old bricks better than the neoclassical pomposity on the other side of the building.
