Cass County is a small, rural county along both the Illinois and Sangamon Rivers, and straight west of the capital city of Springfield. , Illinois. Located in west central Illinois, Cass County had a population of 13,042 at the 2020 census making it one of the least populated counties in Illinois. The Cass County seat is located in the city of Virginia.

Formerly the home of Adam Lindsay Gordon, a British-Australian poet, horseman, police officer and politician. He was the first Australian poet to gain considerable recognition overseas, and according to his contemporary, writer Marcus Clarke, Gordon's work represented "the beginnings of a national school of Australian poetry".
Caldonian Hotel, Robe was built by Scotsman Peter McQueen in 1858. Poet Adam Lindsay Gordon stayed there and later married the licensee's daughter Maggie Park. Timbers and doors from ships wrecked in nearby Guichen Bay were used in construction of the Inn.
