Lanternon.

Leighterton Church

St Andrew's Church, in the centre of the Cotswold village of Leighterton, was built in the 13th century. I loved the stillness of the village and the churchyard.

This photo and the previous one in my stream were taken from the same spot: the centre of the small Cotswold village of Leighterton near Tetbury, in 'The Street'. We were staying there at Ashtree Farm B&B.

15 Augustus

Today, 15 August 2020, it was exactly 75 years ago that the Second World War ended. Japan announced its capitulation. These days the end of WW2 is commemorated on a limited scale in The Netherlands.
For The Netherlands in 1945 it meant that also the Netherlands Indies were liberated and the idea was that it would become Netherlands Indies again. Liberated it was, but not again Dutch. Two days after the Japanese capitulation the republic Indonesia was proclaimed by Soekarno. After an expensive (colonial) war in which The Netherlands tried to reconquer sovereignty, this was handed over to Indonesia in december 1949. On both sides there were many casualties.

Kerktorentje ~ Church tower (De Koog, Texel) by Swaentje5

Kerktorentje ~ Church tower (De Koog, Texel)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The origins of the small church of De Koog go back to 1415, when Duke William II of Bavaria-Straubing, also known as count William IV of Holland, count William VI of Hainaut and count William V of Zeeland, gave the people of Rijsduinen, near De Koog, permission to build a chapel. Over the centuries the building of course changed a lot and often suffered from sand, sea and storms. In 1571 it was also severely damaged by the Watergeuzen (Sea Beggars, but in fact pirates), opponents of the Spanish and the catholic church during the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648). Probably in 1791, the year in one of the wall anchors, it was restored with old bricks. The mechanical clockwork dates from the 17th century. Nowadays it is wound up electrically.
Windhaantje ~ Weathercock
Een windhaan of weerhaan is een windwijzer in de vorm van een haan. Sommige torenhanen zitten op een windkruis en/of op een metalen bol. Ze worden vooral geplaatst op de spits van kerktorens.
Some background information:
The weathercock, also called weather vane or wind vane, is an instrument for showing the direction of the wind. The word "vane" comes from the Old English word "fana" meaning "flag". Weathercocks are typically used as an architectural ornament to the highest point of a building.
Weathercocks have a long history: The Tower of the Winds on the ancient Greek Agora in Athens once bore on its roof a wind vane in the form of a bronze Triton holding a rod in his outstretched hand, rotating as the wind changed direction. Below, the frieze was adorned with the eight wind deities. The eight metre high structure also featured sundials and a water clock.
At around 600, Pope Gregory I said that the cock would be the most suitable emblem of Christianity as it would be the emblem of St Peter. Some say that as a result of this the cock began gradually to be used as a weather vane on church steeples. In fact Pope Nicholas I ordered the figure of a cock to be placed on every church steeple in the 9th century, as the cock was regarded to be a symbol of Jesus' prophecy of Peter's betrayal, whereby Peter denied Jesus three times before the rooster crowed on the morning following the Last Supper. Many churches followed the pontifical decree and installed the symbol of a cock on their weather vanes.
In the famous Bayeux Tapestry of the 1070s there is a depiction of a man installing a cock on Westminster Abbey. However, as previously mentioned, other sources say that this custom had already begun more than two centuries earlier. In fact, the oldest weather vane with the shape of a cock existing in the world is the Gallo di Ramperto, made in 820 and now preserved in the Museo di Santa Giulia in Brescia, Lombardy.
While early weather vanes had very ornamental pointers, modern wind vanes are usually simple arrows that dispense with wind directions because the instrument is connected with a remote reading station. An early example of a modern wind vane was installed on the roof of the Royal Navy's Admiralty Building in London: It was mechanically linked to a large dial in the boardroom, so that senior officers were always aware of the wind direction when they were having a meeting.
Even more modern wind vanes combine the directional vane with an anemometer, which is a device for measuring the wind speed. The co-location of both instruments allows them to use the same axis, a vertical rod, and provides a coordinated readout.
Dutch church - Hervormde kerk in Echteld
Explore # 250 October 3, 2012
De Nederlands Hervormde Kerk in het Gelderse dorp Echteld stamt voor een deel nog uit de elfde eeuw en overigens uit het begin van de 15e eeuw. Omstreeks 1958 vond een ingrijpende restauratie plaats.
The Dutch Reformed Church in the Gelderland village Echteld dates in part from the eleventh century, and also from the early 15th century. About 1958 the church was restorated substantially.
