Even in times of Beethoven, the Wienerwald was a good retreat from the hectic city life and a bottomless well of inspiration. These days Vienna came closely to the forest with some of the houses penetrating in-between the trees. But the tranquillity is still here if you are not lazy to walk at least half an hour away from the parking spots or bus stations. The approximately 45-year-old ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) 5,6 MW loco 1144 013 pulls a heavy freight train through the Vienna Woods in a westerly direction over the Rekawinkler Hill. ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) 5,6 MW loco 1144 264 operated by Rail Cargo Austria (RCA) has reached Rekawinkel station with its heavy mixed freight train - the highest point of the Wienerwald line - and will now start the descent through the Vienna Woods to the west. (Lower Austria)

This is Eurocity 11 Car train number EC22 operated by the Bombardier DB (Deutsche Bahn) 101 027 from Wien West Bahnhof (Vienna / Austria) to Dortmund (Germany) Hauptbahnhof. Seen here during the journey through Rekawinkel train station, 25 km west of Vienna. At that time, all trains had to take the route through the Vienna Woods. Today, this route is only used by local traffic and as a diversion route. Long-distance traffic uses the new tunnel line through the Tullnerfeld, which opened in 2012.
