Amtrak Floridian northbound with private observation car Hiram on the rear as it passes through the golf course on the SCL's ex SAL line in Clearwater, Florida, 3-31-1978, Fred Clark, Jr. It appears that a couple couches are in the consist ahead of the combine, and they may be dead-head cars. Over the years Fred was able to capture many railroad images on this golf course that was about three block away from his home.

Amtrak Floridian northbound, led by SDP40F locomotive 604, is located at the old ACL - SAL crossover track with locomotives from the last southbound Amtrak Champion, train # 85 in tow, seen in Clearwater, Florida, 9-10-1977, Fred Clark, Jr. The Floridan was always easy to spot with its dome car within its consist. You can easily see the engineer in his front cab window. The train is operating on the SCL's ex ACL line from saint Petersburg and will now crossover to the SAL line that heads to Tampa after its station stop in Clearwater.

Amtrak Floridian northbound is led by F40PH locomotive 609 as it heads out of town at Betty Lane & golf course in Clearwater, Florida, 9-17-1977, Fred Clark, Jr. Fred at this time often took photos in this area and around the golf course because it was only a few block away from his home. Usually one dome car was included in the Floridian consist, but on a few occasions I observed two dome cars.

Thundering along the Donner Pass Route, Union Pacific 4014 charges east through Soda Springs, California. The 4014 has just started the second half of the “Westward Bound” Tour. After traveling to Roseville via the ex Western Pacific mainline (Feather River Canyon), the UP 4014 is now headed east via the old Southern Pacific mainline. After a long and challenging battle up the Donner Pass Route, the UP 4014 is now only a few miles from the summit (Tunnel 41). The high elevations and steep climb through the Sierra Nevada Mountains has to be a top highlight of entire Westward Bound Tour.
Built and delivered in 1941, the UP 4014 is one of the world famous “Big Boys”. At 132’ long and weighing 1.2 million pounds, the UP 4014 is one of the largest locomotives ever built. The UP 4014 remained in service until 1961. During its 20 year service life, it logged over a million miles along the Union Pacific system. The Big Boys were primarily utilized to haul heavy freight trains through the Wahsatch Mountains between Utah and Wyoming.
Today, the Union Pacific 4014 is the crown jewel of the UP Steam Program. Based in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the UP Steam Team services and restores a fleet of vintage locomotives. These locomotives periodically travel the UP System. These “living legends” bring joy and happiness to everyone who has a chance to see them in person.
