This picture was taken on the grounds of the Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf Railway Museum, but does not show any museum pieces. After decades as a museum, the roundhouse has been converted back into a commercial railroad workshop. A second roundhouse on the grounds is still a museum and is large enough to hold all of the museum's exhibits.
There is an unseen side to the picture. I was there with a friend who was recovering from a very serious illness.

A typical view of the Muegeln shed in the 1980s. Although these locomotives were rebuilt in the 1960s and have very few original parts left, they are still the same in principle and construction. They were first built in 1892 and still represent the technology of that time. They have two trucks and a compound steam engine (2 high and 2 low pressure cylinders) using wet steam.
At the time the picture was taken, the trains on this line did not have air brakes. Instead, they still used the original 19th century system where a rope was used to control the brakes (Heberlein brake). When the rope was taut, the brakes were loose. You can see the rope between the cab and the smokestack of the locomotive.

Bridport in 1963

A green 3-car DMU set with whiskers, waits at the Up platform at Bridport with the next service to Maiden Newton. The Down platform is still in-use and the station is gas lit. The GW Type 5 brick signal box which opened on 2nd July 1894 is on the right. It replaced an earlier box of 1883 and contained a 27 lever Stud frame. It closed on 8th June 1965, with closure of the goods yard and conversion of the line to a 'siding' from Maiden Newton. Note the water column and fire devil, also the signalman's motorcycle on the platform and upper quadrant SR rail-built Up starter, a legacy of when the Southern Region assumed control of the branch, following a boundary change in April 1950.

Vauxhall & Duddeston 1965 (pjs 1410)

Peter has this negative in an envelope marked "Duddeston", seeing the 'V' on the platform lamp I wondered what was going on, then I remembered! of course the station was Vauxhall & Duddeston in the 1960's.
The picture is interesting because it shows the early stages of electrification and the old signals are about to be replaced by new colour lights. In the centre is a water column complete with a brazier basket, just to the right of the gantry Vauxhall & Duddeston signal box can be seen
The diesel shunter, D3775, was in shiny green paint and the rolling stock would have been in B.R. maroon.
D3775 was built at Derby Works, it entered service new to Rowsley 11/07/1959. Under TOPS it became 08608. The loco was withdrawn from Thornaby 07/11/1988 and cut at C.F. Booth (Rotherham) 13/04/1994. At the time of this picture it was an Aston 21D based machine.

Northampton Station Northampton 19th April 2007

Steam age infrastructure still exists on the all -electric railway if you know where to look. This, presumably ex-LNWR, water column is still connected to the mains in the siding just north of Northampton Castle station.

It should really be installed at Rothley on the Great Central Railway because we were given first refusal to remove it about 4 years ago. Unfortunately after much negotiation work had been done it fell at the fence of cost. Although donated free the cost of closing the adjacent line, isolating the current & providing a Network Rail supervisor was too expensive for the GCR management. The offer still holds so if we can raise the money for removal & reinstallation, who knows it may still go ahead.

UPDATE:February 2024. We passed through yesterday and it's still standing!

Watering the Iron Horse

As dusk approaches, the day’s work for preserved BR Standard Class 9F 92214 is not yet done, as it is scheduled to haul an evening dining train on the Great Central Railway. The fireman duly ‘puts the bag on’ to replenish the loco’s water requirements.

Freight trucks powered by battery; plastic pick-up by robot

On this weekday morning at the grocery+retail Superstore there is a parking lot display of some corporate-funded Green Projects. One is the Meijer truck fleet, gradually shifting to battery-powered trucks for some routes. The other is a ?autonomous plastic filtering robot to sift the bottom waters of Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes to gather small plastic fragments in the water column.

Jawor was the last place for photography on our way back home from Upper Silesia. It was sunday afternoon and the expectations were low to see a freight train. But as we arrived at Jawor a northbound train was ready to depart. We only had to wait for the passenger services to pass and after that the freight train departed.
